I. PRE-CELTIC PERIOD until 1066 (when William the Concqueror came to England)

! celtic [keltik; seltik] - obidva spôsoby výslovnosti sú správne

· first inhabitants (settlers, stone age men) came to Britain over the dry land (old stone age)
· towards the end of ice age - mighty pre-historic river flouted (plávala, pretekala) the land joining (spojujúc) Britain & Europe - later the rivers Thames & Severn
· first settlers were hunters
· the Iberians came 3000-2000 B.C. from Mediterranean, they settled round the western shores; had organised tribes & used the work of slaves; cultivated barley (jačmeň), had sheep - agricultural way of life
· around 2000-1700 B.C. the Beaker Folk (beak = zobák; typical shape of pottery); they were better organised than the Iberians; more highly developed concetration of wealth & class structure ; monolithic civilisation - because of Stonehenge (Salisbury Plain)

the Celts
· some of the Gaelic languages still exist
· arrived in 3 successive waves: the first invadors were the Gaels; later came the Brythons (600-500 B.C.) , they pushed the Gaels northward; were more numerous , spread & the name „Britain“ arrived from their name; started to use iron, their civilisation was based on agriculture; they can be noted for high quality of weapons, used gold, bronze, iron
· 3rd wave of Celts - the Belgae [belží] (100 B.C.); their civilisation was the most highly developed; they began to found fortified towns
