Assyrian Culture:
capital: Ashur time period: 2000 BC - 650 BC
-known for their ferocity in battle thanks to Old Testament descriptions and ruins found
-from 2000 BC to around 1700 BC was the Old Assyrian Empire
-Babylonians and Mitanni destroyed the empire around the time of Hammurabi
-from 1350 BC to around 1000 BC saw the ascent of the Middle Assyrian Empire
-Assyrians seemed to develop new tactics of fighting which enabled them to control most of Mesopotamia... Tiglathpileser I (ca. 1075 BC) was known as a conqueror -from 1000 BC to around 600 BC, the New Assyrian Empire was at it’s height
-the Assyrians ruled an area from Iran to Egypt and into the middle of Turkey
-their economy was mainly agricultural with sheep herding and wheat growing
-they were not known as traders, but rather probably made most of their money in tribute
-it was an absolute monarchy with governors in charge of the provinces
-they were known for their chariots, camelry and cavalry as well as taking of walled cities (Samaria)
-around 650 BC, the Assyrians faced a revolt by the subjugated Babylonians and Medes (Persians)
